2001 GMC Jimmy Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace Front (Single Piston) Brake Calipers on 2001 GMC Jimmy?
A: A brake caliper replacement on the front (single Piston) starts with draining two-thirds of fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. To start the replacement process securely lift the vehicle and install equipment safety stands after that remove the tire and wheel assembly. Place a c-clamp across the outer Brake Pad and caliper, while tightening it until the Piston reaches the bottom of the caliper bore then you can remove the clamp. Remove the front brake hose fitting along with both gaskets from the caliper while dispensing the brake hose fittings and discarding the gaskets and plugging holes. After removing both caliper mounting bolts and caliper from the assembly, proceed with brake lining removal and discard the rubber o-rings. Check mounting bolts and sleeves for corrosion and immediately replace found corroded pieces while inspecting the brake hose fitting bolt for blockages which require removal of blockages when detected. Check linings for wear and inspect the caliper for damage. To begin the installation process first apply delco silicone lube (GM P/N 18010909) or equivalent on both sleeves and bushings then mount the new set of rubber o-ring bushings to the caliper and the caliper mounting bolt sleeves. Squeeze the inner edge caliper boot next to the Piston until it pushes trapped air out before flattening the boot below the Piston face. Place brake linings inside the caliper before you install the two mounting bolts alongside the caliper and tighten them to 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.). First squeeze the lining ears next to the caliper before you install the brake hose fitting and both new gaskets together with the brake hose fitting bolt. Tighten the brake hose fitting to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). Use a file to modify the corners of the front brake caliper mounting holes on the Steering Knuckle until the specified range of clearance is reached. Check for damage when the total clearance measurement exceeds this limit. Check that the total measurement of the clearance gap between caliper and Steering Knuckle falls between 0.26 - 0.60 mm (0.010 - 0.024 inch). The procedure ends with a bleed of the caliper followed by wheel and tire installation and a low vehicle position then a leak check for the brake system.
