- Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2000 GMC Jimmy?A: To replace the rear brake caliper eliminate two-thirds of brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. Jack up the vehicle and support it on suitable safety stands; then dismount the tire and wheel assembly. Place a c-clamp across the outer Brake Pad and the caliper and tighten the clamp until the Piston bottoms in the caliper bore as long as you carefully monitor the brake fluid level so as not to overflow the container. When you remove the c-clamp, discard the brake hose front by taking off the brake hose fitting and two gaskets and then plugging the holes in the caliper housing and brake hose fitting. Then, take off the caliper guide pin bolts and the caliper from the anchor bracket as well as brake pads. Inspect the guide pin bolts and sleeves for sign of corrosion and replace the ones that are corroded, inspect the brake hose fitting bolt off blockage, clear off any of the blockage or replace the bolt as needed. Check brake-pad wear and replace when necessary, as well as the caliper. When installing, make sure that the inner edge caliper boot beside the Piston is lifted to press out trapped air and lay flat below the Piston face. Mount the caliper onto the rotor and into the anchor bracket, lubricating the guide pin bolts with delco silicone lube (GM P/N 18010909) or equivalent. Replace the caliper guide pin bolts to the caliper bracket and tighten it to 31 nm (23 ft. Lbs.), and make sure the brake hose is not twisted and kinked. Mount the rear brake hose fitting with a pair of new gaskets and brake hose fitting bolt and tighten to 44 nm (33 fordama). Bleed the caliper and re-install the tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle, with the engine running, firmly press on the brake pedal three times before inspecting the brake system for leaks.
