2002 Buick Century Heater Core Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Heater Core on 2002 Buick Century?
A: Hose clamp pliers (J 38185) represent the required tool for Heater Core replacement. Start the repair process by taking off either the air cleaner assembly for 3.1l engines and the fuel injector sight shield for 3.8l engines and then disconnect the cross vehicle brace. The Heater Core requires positioning of the heater hose inlet and outlet clamps using hose clamp pliers (J 38185) before disconnecting the hoses while draining the coolant. To disconnect the Heater Core from its assembly at the rear area floor duct your first step should be positioning the Heater Core outlet cover downward and rearward before removing the lower floor console along with right and left instrument panel insulators. First remove all screws at both the Heater Core outlet cover then unscrew the screws from the Heater Core cover. Simply discard the seals (1,2) from the Heater Core cover followed by removing the caulk before discarding the outer seal from the Heater Core. Slide the screw out from the Heater Core line clamp and Heater Core retaining clamp as well as the Heater Core pipe retainer clamp before pulling out the Heater Core from the hvac lower case. The hvac lower case requires removal of its lower and center and upper and side seals together with the surrounding parts. Begin Heater Core installation by placing the hvac case with side seals, upper seal, center seal, lower seal and then installing the Heater Core. Fasten both the Heater Core line clamp and Heater Core mounting clip with screw while tightening them to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Install the outer seal to the Heater Core followed by new seals (1,2) to the Heater Core cover and apply caulk before securing it with screws at 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Reinstall the Heater Core outlet cover with screws then tighten them to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). After that complete installation of the lower floor console, right and left instrument panel insulators. To complete the Heater Core installation the technician must connect the inlet and outlet heater hoses using the hose clamp pliers (J 38185) and reposition the clamps before adding coolant to the system followed by reinstalling the cross vehicle brace with the air cleaner assembly for 3.1l engines or the fuel injector sight shield for 3.8l engines.
