2002 Chevrolet Camaro Brake Disc Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Disc on 2002 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: To service and fix the brake disc, start by the fact that refinishing is not a part of the routine brake system service until there are particular conditions, these are as follows; excessive corruption/rust, pitting, cracks, heat spots, excessive bluing discoloration, scoring beyond maximum specifications, lateral run away beyond maximum specifications, and thickness variation beyond maximum specifications exist. Examine both discs for thickness and wear of the surface and if refinished, use J 41013 Rotor Resurfacing Kit (J 41013) to clean corrosion from wheel bearing flange and J 42450-A Wheel Hub Resurfacing Kit (J 42450-A) to clean brake disc mating surface and mounting face. Mount the brake disc to the brake lathe based on instruction provided by the manufacturer on mounting that guarantees all attachments are clean and aligned. Run the lathe while introducing the cutting instruments into the disc friction surfaces and check the witness mark; When it does not reach three-quarters of the disc, remount it. The instructions of the lathe manufacturer should also be followed to refurbish the disc (check the thickness after each cut and replace the disc if it has a thickness below the minimal allowable one). To obtain a non-directional finish, follow the recommended speed settings and apply the finish using 120 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper, if with a non-directional finishing tool or a sanding block and 150-grit aluminum oxide/sandpaper in its absence. Finally wash all the friction surfaces using denatured alcohol or a similar brake cleaner right before you take off the brake disc from the lathe.
