2002 Chevrolet Camaro Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable on 2002 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: Start by completely disengaging the park brake lever which should activate its handle to rest at the bottom position while turning off the brake indicator lamp. Lift the vehicle still placing it on a suitable support. Completely stretch the front cable strand before cutting the tie strap. The Parking Brake Cable Release Tool (J 37043) enables removing the rear cable from its underbody bracket by compressing the retainer fingers on the conduit casing to extract the cable from the bracket. The next step involves disassembly of the two rear park brake cables from the park brake cable equalizer followed by removal of the park brake rear cable through its guide bearing installed on the rear axle housing until it unlocks from the park brake actuator lever. Before removing the rear cable from the cable bracket use Parking Brake Cable Release Tool (J 37043) to compress the retainer fingers on the conduit fitting. Before cable attachment begin by inserting the rear conduit fitting to the bracket where the park brake cable links before attaching the rear cable eyelet to the actuator lever. After placing the retainer fingers against the park brake cable bracket position the rear cable through all park brake cable guides along the rear axle housing. Keep the left-hand cable above the tie rod bracket during this process. The rear park brake cable should be connected to the park brake cable equalizer before being installed into the underbody bracket while you restore the tie strap if it was originally present. Lower the vehicle and perform three cycles of the park brake lever operation.
