2002 Chevrolet Malibu Fuel Pressure Regulator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the fuel pressure regulator on 2002 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The first procedure for servicing the Fuel Pressure Regulator requires fuel system pressure relief. Cut off the vacuum hose supply to the Fuel Pressure Regulator then unscrew its retaining screw. You need to use a shop towel to catch any fuel spills while you detach the Fuel Pressure Regulator from the Fuel Rail after lifting and twisting it. The rail should receive both the retainer and spacer bracket removal followed by removing the Fuel Pressure Regulator from the engine fuel return pipe. Discard the inlet o-ring. You must connect the fuel return line during installation to stop the regulator from rotating because an improper action will damage the retainer and spacer bracket and create a fuel leak. You must not clean or test the Fuel Pressure Regulator with compressed air to prevent damage to the components since you must clean the filter screen using gasoline and should never place the regulator in solvent solution. Fuel Pressure Regulator replacement must be performed when contamination of the filter screen is detected. The new inlet o-ring requires cleaning oil for lubrication before installation on the regulator inlet. Fit the fuel return pipe to the regulator permanently before you add the new retainer together with the spacer bracket into the slot on the Fuel Rail. The pressure regulator should connect to the Fuel Rail while the 17 n.m (13 lb ft) torque setting should be used to tighten the engine fuel return pipe nut. Install the Fuel Pressure Regulator vacuum line while tightening its attaching screw to 8.5 n.m (76 lb in). A correct installation of the retainer with spacer bracket in the Fuel Rail slots can be verified by tugging on the regulator until the proper seating position is reached. After the on and off ignition sequence measures 10 seconds you must restart the engine then inspect for fuel leakage.
