2003 Chevrolet Malibu Fuel Pressure Regulator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the fuel pressure regulator on 2003 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The first step to maintain the Fuel Pressure Regulator starts with removing all fuel system pressure. You must disconnect the vacuum line of the Fuel Pressure Regulator before removing its retaining screw. The Fuel Pressure Regulator should be detached from the Fuel Rail through a process of lifting and twisting motions while using a shop towel to contain any fuel spillage. Separate the retainer with spacer bracket and unhook the Fuel Pressure Regulator from its position on the engine fuel return pipe before you dispose of both the spacer bracket and the inlet o-ring. After connecting the fuel return line it is necessary to prevent the regulator from rotating because such movement could result in damage to the retainer and spacer bracket and produce a fuel leak. The testing or cleaning phase of the Fuel Pressure Regulator requires no use of compressed air to prevent damage and requires manual filter screen cleaning with gasoline but must not soak the regulator in a solvent bath. Test the filter screen for foreign substances because any contamination requires you to change the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Install the new regulator inlet o-ring after applying clean engine oil as lubricant to its surface. First attach the fuel return pipe to the regulator after which the new retainer and spacer bracket should be installed into the Fuel Rail slot. Connect the Fuel Rail pressure regulator while torquing the engine fuel return pipe nut to 17 n.m (13 lb ft). Install the Fuel Pressure Regulator vacuum line and thread in its attaching screw before tightening it to 8.5 n.m (76 lb in). Check that the retainer along with the spacer bracket fits into the Fuel Rail slots correctly by applying force to the regulator. Conduct a leak check by performing this sequence: turn ignition on for two seconds, wait off for ten seconds and return to on before examining for fuel leaks.
