2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace Rear Brake Calipers on 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: Begin the rear brake caliper replacement by checking brake master cylinder fluid levels; if fluid exceeds midpoint between maximum-full and minimum levels drain fluid to reach this point. The fluid amount needs adjustment towards that midway point if the reservoir shows more than the middle of both maximum-full and minimum limits. First raise the vehicle while providing support and then remove both the tire and wheel assembly from the rear side. Use your hands to screw two wheel lug nuts until the rotor stays in place on the hub. You should use a large c-clamp to position over the brake caliper top against the outboard Brake Pad back surface. Tighten this clamp till the caliper piston pushes into the caliper bore enough to remove the caliper from the rotor. Extract the c-clamp and brake hose-to-caliper bolt while discarding the two existing copper brake hose gaskets. Use a piece of material to seal the rear brake hose opening followed by removal of the caliper bolts (1 and 3) along with the caliper from its position between the caliper bracket and rotor . When checking caliper bracket bolt boots you must replace every defective boot as well as inspect and replace damaged caliper bolts with new bushings and bolts. When installing the caliper position it over the rotor combined with caliper bracket after assuring correct placement of bushings. Validate the caliper bolts (1 and 3) by observing threads and then apply silicone grease along with lubricating the 2 bolt boots (13 and 4) residing in the caliper bracket. Fasten caliper bolts numbers 1 and 3 while making sure boot leather fits properly without causing damage and torque them to 44 nm (32 ft. Lbs.). Place the new copper brake hose gaskets onto the brake hose bolt followed by installing the brake hose-to-caliper bolt with a torque of 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). To complete the brake job reinstall the rear wheel and tire assembly after removing the rotor hub retaining lug nuts then lower the vehicle then fill the master cylinder to correct fluid level bleed the system and check the hydraulic brake system for leaks.
