How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?

You must separate the rear brake caliper from your vehicle before starting with the overhaul process. Apply low pressure compressed air through the fluid inlet hole to extract the Brake Caliper Piston from the caliper bore. Carefully extract the piston dust boot seal from the seal counterbore of the caliper using a small wooden or plastic tool before discarding it and then removing the piston seal from the caliper bore. Moving forward remove the bleeder valve and its attached cap from the caliper. Use denatured alcohol or its equivalent to clean and dry the caliper piston bore and seal counterbore and caliper piston surface using non-lubricated filtered air. The bore of the caliper should be inspected for signs of cracks or scoring or pitting or excessive rust or corrosion. Close rust or corrosion requires fine emery paper treatment but complete corrosion requires a new caliper installation. A replacement of the caliper assembly becomes necessary for every incident of severe damage including both cracks and excessive corrosion conditions. Replace the caliper piston if you detect any damage to the chrome plating, cracking, or scoring. Seal the piston with delco supreme 11(R) (GM P/N 12377967) or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid from a clean sealed container before installing it into the caliper bore. Put the caliper piston into the bore and then add the new piston dust boot seal above the piston. Use either a caliper piston dust boot seal installer or an equivalent tool with a capacity to fully seat the dust boot seal at its specified counterbore diameter of 38.1 mm (1.50 inch) and piston bore diameter of 48.0 mm (1.89 inch). Reinstall the bleeder valve together with the cap to the caliper while tightening the valve until it reaches a secure position before remounting the rear brake caliper to the vehicle.
