2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front brake calipers on 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: A technician should start the front brake caliper replacement process by checking the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid position. Check fluid levels in the master cylinder reservoir until they sit at the average position between maximum and minimum limits. First support the vehicle then lift it before removing both front tire assemblies. Apply enough pressure with a large c-clamp on top of the brake caliper that pushes the piston into the caliper bore to free the caliper from the rotor. Remove the c-clamp followed by removal of the brake hose-to-caliper bolt which requires discarding the 2 copper brake hose gaskets . Secure the opening of the front brake hose with a plug to avoid substantial fluid loss. The leading caliper pin bolt uses a bushing but the trailing pin bolt remains solid without a bushing. You must disassemble the caliper pin bolts and remove the caliper from the rotor and caliper bracket connection. Examine the caliper bolt boots for damage before replacing defective parts and inspect the caliper bolts for both corrosion and damage using new caliper pin bolts if needed. Application of gm p/n 18047666 lubricant or its equivalent must be performed on brake caliper pin bolts and bushing after removing all debris, old lubricant and ensuring that lubricant distribution is uniform without creating excess buildup on the leading caliper pin end. Position the caliper over the rotor so that it joins the caliper bracket while directing the leading caliper pin bolt through its bushing and maintaining a solid trailing pin bolt. Securely position caliper pin bolts before fitting bolt boots into their respective grooves. Replace any damaged pin bolt boots and tighten the bolts to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.). Mount the brake hose bolt to the brake hose using new copper brake hose gaskets . Tighten the brake hose-to-caliper bolt to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). Start by removing the 2 wheel lug nuts and placing the front tire with its matching wheel assembly on the vehicle then lower it to the ground. Next fill the master cylinder with clean brake fluid to the specified level while bleeding the brakes then examine for fluid leaks.
