2002 Chevrolet Prizm Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the steering knuckle on 2002 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: Replacing a Steering Knuckle requires vehicle elevation and wheel and tire removal. The installation process starts by disconnecting the abs wheel speed sensor through one bolt removal when present then placing it off to the side. Start by eliminating the brake hose bolt and hose that attaches to the strut before placing them safely away. Remove one bolt and two nuts from the lower Control Arm before disconnecting the drive shaft nut retainer along with the drive axle's cotter pin. A colleague should keep the brake pedal pressed down while you take out the drive shaft nut. Unnecessary brake parts should never be suspended from hose lines to prevent damage. Suspend the caliper housing using wire after you remove it and its associated Brake Caliper Bracket to protect the brake hose from damage. Take appropriate precautions to protect the boot along with the inner oil seal and avoid damaging speed sensor rotors when performing procedures on vehicles with abs technology. Examine the Steering Knuckle while removing the brake rotor to check for bearing backlash along with hub deviation. Begin loosening the strut assembly's lower side nuts while leaving the bolts untouched and take away both the outer tie rod pin and nut. Use the universal steering linkage puller (J24319-D) to disconnect the outer tie rod from the knuckle while you remove the lower strut assembly's two nuts and two bolts to extract the Steering Knuckle along with its hub. Use a soft-jawed clamp to hold the Steering Knuckle before you extract the ball stud with universal steering linkage puller j24319-d from the knuckle after removing both the pin and nut. Screw the ball stud into the Steering Knuckle followed by installation of the ball stud nut. Maintain a torque of 124 ohm (91 ft. Lbs.) during installation and populate the Steering Knuckle with the cotter pin. Transfer the Steering Knuckle with hub to the vise then apply engine oil to the two lower strut assembly nuts before installing the steered unit without tight bolt torque. Secure the outer tie rod to the Steering Knuckle by tightening the outer tie rod nut to 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.) while guiding the cotter pin into position through an extra 1/6 turn of nut rotation or a maximum of 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.). Put the cotter pin into place on the tie rod stud opening while checking the Steering Knuckle for bearing backlash and hub misalignment before adding the front brake rotor and brake caliper housing and caliper bracket assembly. Tighten the drive shaft nut to 225 nm (166 ft. Lbs.) under brake-assisted conditions followed by installation of the drive shaft nut retainer and cotter pin. Connect the Control Arm components using one bolt and two nuts. Tighten each component to 142 nm (105 ft. Lbs.) before torquing the lower strut assembly nuts and bolts to 274 nm (203 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly before lowering the vehicle for front wheel alignment inspection. Secure the abs wheel speed sensor to the knuckle using one bolt at 8 nm (71 inch lbs.) then tighten the front brake hose bolt to 29 nm (22 ft. Lbs.), and complete the installation with a final bolt to the knuckle at 8 nm (71 inch lbs.).
