- Q: How to replace the left camshaft on 2003 Cadillac DeVille?A: To remove the left Camshaft, one should first pull out the left Camshaft cover. Rotate the Crankshaft to tdc of the #1 cylinder's compression stroke using the Crankshaft rotation socket (J 39946), ensuring both Camshaft sprocket drive pins are at the top of their rotation. Mount the Camshaft holding tool (J 44212) over the camshafts and apply an open wrench to the hex section cast into the latter camshafts to prevent rotation when removing the Camshaft sprocker bolts. Two tapped positions will hold the fixture to the front rail of the cylinder head. After removing the bolts, install the secondary drive timing chain/ sprocket holding fixture (J 44213) on the front rail of the cylinder head. Pull off the left secondary Camshaft drive chain shoe access plug and loosen the left side secondary Camshaft drive chain shoe bolt two full turns. Slide the Camshaft intake and exhaust onto the pins of the j 44213, one at a time, loosen the Camshaft-bearing cap bolts enough to relieves the pressure of the valve spring that you might use and remove the Camshaft-bearing caps. Remove the j44212 from the camshafts and remove the camshafts and Camshaft follower and clean and inspect the camshafts. For installation, lubricant gm p/n 12345001 or equivalent should be applied to the roller pivot pocket and valve slot of Camshaft followers, ensuring the Camshaft followers are properly aligned on the valve tip and stationary hydraulic lash adjusters (SHLA). Clean Camshaft carriers and apply lubricant to Camshaft carriers, Camshaft lobes, and Camshaft journals. Install the Camshaft in the carriers with the sprocket drive pins at the top of the their rotation, lobes neutral, using the Camshaft bearing caps as a guide to making sure they are correctly installed. Lubricate the Camshaft bearing caps, and install according to the identification marks tightening the bolts in flush right to 5 nm (44 inch lbs.) then an additional 30° using the torque angle/meter (J 36660-A). Line up the camshafts, place the j 44212 over them, and remove the Camshaft sprockets off the pins of the j 44213 and put them on the camshafts. Tighten the left secondary Camshaft drive chain shoe bolt to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs) and reinstall the access plug to 4.5 nm (40 inch lbs). Unscrew the j 44213 carefully while pressing the Camshaft sprockets against the camshafts and use an open wrench in an attempt to avoid rotation in installing and tightening the Camshaft sprocket bolts to 120 nm (89 ft. Lbs.). Check alinement of Camshaft sprocket. Remove j 44212. Finally, install left cam cover.
