2003 Chevrolet Cavalier Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace brake calipers on 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: Before brake caliper replacement check the fluid level inside the brake master cylinder reservoir. The fluid level requires adjustment when it reaches midway between maximum-full point and minimum allowable level. Proper fluid quantity is halfway between these marks. Lift up the vehicle before taking out the wheel and tire assembly. Screw two wheel nuts to different wheel studs using sufficient hand force to fix the rotor to hub. Position a large c-clamp across the brake caliper so its ends touch the caliper body and outer Brake Pad until the caliper piston moves past the brake rotor through compression. Clean the brake hose end before you remove the brake hose-to-caliper bolt and brake hose while disposing of the 2 copper brake hose gaskets . First secure opening of the brake caliper as well as brake hose using proper plugs before fully loosening the caliper bolts attaching to the Steering Knuckle and removing the brake caliper. The caliper assembly has its brake pads with disc brake caliper bolts removed to examine the caliper bolts for signs of rust, damage or corrosion; examine all components and replace damaged items including the bolts as well as any bushings needed replacement. After applying lubrication to caliper bushings install caliper bolts to the caliper followed by Brake Pad installation. Place a light coating of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant on the Steering Knuckle's Brake Pad mating surface then mount the caliper assembly on the Steering Knuckle by torquing caliper bolts to 51 nm (38 lb ft). Begin by removing the brake caliper's plugs and caps before adding new copper brake hose gaskets with a brake hose bolt onto the brake hose and tightening it all to 50 nm (37 lb ft). Perform hydraulic brake bleeding followed by rotor hub nut removal to install tires and wheel components before allowing the vehicle to lower. A proper brake pedal application beginning with the engine turned off involves reaching 2/3 of pedal travel distance then slowly releasing the brake followed by a 15-second pause before reapplying the brake until obtaining a solid pedal feel which proves correct brake caliper piston and Brake Pad seating.
