2004 Chevrolet Cavalier Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace brake calipers on 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: Before replacing the brake caliper, check the content of the fluid in the brake master cylinder reservoir; if it is below the middle point between the maximum-full and minimum allowable levels, add fluid to reach the middle point, if above the middle point between the maximum-full and minimum allowable levels, remove fluid to the middlepoint. Lift and support the vehicle, followed by the removal of the tire - wheel assembly, attaching and hand tight 2 wheel nuts against opposite wheel studs for the retention of rotor to hub. Catch the caliper piston with a large c-clamp over the caliper so that the piston compresses into the bore and the piston slides over the brake rotor, and then release the c-clamp. Take off the brake hose's caliper bolt, along with the brake hose, and dispose of the possible 2 copper brake hose gaskets attached to the caliper or hose end. Clean the brake hose end. Cap or plug the openings to prevent liquid loss then don't tighten or remove the caliper bolts at all from the Steering Knuckle and remove the brake caliper then the brake pads. Check the caliper bolts for rusting and damage; if needed, change bolts and bushings . For installation, lubricate the caliper bushings and caliper bolt and make sure the outer Brake Pad makes the proper facing with the leading edge of the wear sensor for the rotor. Mount the brake pads, clean the Brake Pad mating surface of the Steering Knuckle, and apply a thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant. Mount the caliper assembly to Steering Knuckle and tighten the caliper bolts to 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.). Remove the caps or plugs from the brake caliper and hose, then install new copper brake hose gaskets & the brake hose bolt to the brake hose and tighten the bolt to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Bleed the hydraulic brake system; remove the wheel nuts; fixed tire and wheel assembly; and drop the car. When the engine is off, gradually apply the brake pedal up to about 2/3 of its travel, very slowly lift it, and after 15 seconds, apply it again repeatedly until firm brake pedal is obtained and ensures proper seating of the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
