- Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2004 Buick LeSabre?A: You must remove the rear brake caliper from the vehicle before servicing it because leaks through the non-serviceable seal at the integral park brake actuator shaft require replacement of the entire brake caliper assembly as fluid can enter the system due to an unserviceable seal. Remove caliper sleeves and dust boots while using a small wooden or plastic tool to carefully extract the Brake Caliper Piston dust boot seal retaining ring. Use the spanner type wrench to rotate the Brake Caliper Piston in a counterclockwise direction and extract both components together with the dust boot seal . Both the seal of the piston dust boot and the piston seal must be discarded from the caliper bore. After removing the bleeder valve adjust the park brake actuator lever return spring to reduce tension. Examine the integrated park brake system while leaving the mechanism intact and if the brake caliper shows any seizure replace the entire brake assembly. The caliper piston bore along with seal counterbore and piston and sleeves require cleaning with denatured alcohol followed by drying with filtered non-lubricated air. Visual inspection should focus on the caliper bore to check for breaks, scoring and heavy rust formation; the caliper assembly needs replacement whenever warped caliper components are found. An assessment of caliper piston components for damage will require replacement alongside similar checks for dust boots along with mounting holes. Use a screwdriver to remove first the nut securing the park brake lever before taking off the lever. Use a light tap on the service tab of the park brake actuator shaft seal to remove it before inspection of the sealing surface for pitting or rust or corrosion that would require a new caliper assembly. The park brake actuator lever should be inspected for wear and deformities with replacement when needed. A light coating of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant should be applied to the new park brake actuator shaft seal contact surface before installing the seal and attaching the park brake lever and return spring. After lubricating the new piston seal with delco supreme 11 or gm p/n 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667) or an equivalent fluid from the dot-3 class secure the actuator lever return spring for installation into the caliper bore. After safe insertion of the caliper piston into the caliper bore, rotate it clockwise until it reaches full seating position. After securing the retaining ring into the counterbore with the piston dust boot seal it is best to put on the bleeder valve before tightening it. Fluorinating brake lubricant should be applied to mounting holes and sleeves before installing the dust boots and fitting lubricated parts into their positions. Check for any leaking during hydraulic brake system bleeding before reinstalling the brake caliper to the vehicle. Any front leak past the piston dust boot seal requires replacement of the caliper piston assembly.
