Three essential tools required for wheel drive shaft maintenance include j35910 drive axle seal clamp pliers, j47048 drive axle swage ring clamp and j8059 snap ring pliers. The first step involves checking the transmission sealing surface for corrosion after taking out the wheel drive shaft clean away all corrosion by using 320 grit cloth to rotate against the surface then apply transmission fluid to wipe away remaining debris before reassembly. Remove the large retaining clamp that holds the swage ring using side cutters after you cut through the swage ring with a hand grinder while making sure to avoid any damage to the inboard seal. You must separate the halfshaft inboard seal from its trilobal tripot bushing then move the seal aside before removing the housing away from the tripot joint spider and halfshaft bar. Toss out the trilobal tripot bushing together with both rings and the inboard boot. Use a wire brush to clean the halfshaft bar while the needle rollers, balls, and housing need cleaning solvent treatment to remove all existing grease with contaminants. An inspection of the tripot joint spider assembly and housing together with the needle rollers must identify any signs of damage as well as wear. To assemble the joint seal in position on the halfshaft bar select the new small swage ring then slide the ring along with the joint seal onto its designated groove. Place the halfshaft assembly into a vise before securing it using j47048 while tightening bolts one at a time. To install the spacer ring first use tool j8059 then push the tripot joint spider assembly toward the ring before securing the halfshaft bar retaining ring. Subscribe grease to the inboard halfshaft seal then repack the housing by securing the trilobal tripot bushing to rest flush against the housing face. The larger new seal retaining clamp should go on the inboard halfshaft seal before moving the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly. Verify that the seal maintains its proper shape. Position the halfshaft inboard seal and tripot housing and large seal retaining clamp before clamping with j35910 to 176 nm (130 ft. Lbs.) then verify the clamp ear gap measurement before additional tightening to achieve 2.60 mm (0.102 inch).
