2004 Cadillac CTS Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the ignition coil(s) on Bank 1 on 2004 Cadillac CTS?
A: In order to change the Ignition Coil(s) on bank 1, start by relieving the fuel system pressure. Take the quick connect fittings off the Fuel Rail, i.e., return hose/pipecollector hose/pipe , and then seal the open outlets to avoid the loss of fluid as well as contamination. Next, you should unplug the evaporative emission (EVAP) quick connect fitting and the retainer at the engine control module (ECM) bracket by disconnecting chassis hose/pipes to remove them. Unclip the two cable harness clips that hold the engine wiring harness to the ecm bracket , and remove two bolts securing the afterboil coolant pump to the ecm bracket and set it out of the way. Always turn off the ignition before working with ecm connectors because it avoids physical damage. Undo the screw to anchor the ecm ground wire to the ecm; flip the release levers to open and pull off the ecm connectors from the ecm . Release the bolt that holds the coolant inlet pipe to the ecm bracket and the ecm bracket bolts from the intake plenum and the cylinder head. Take out the ecm bracket but in its attachment to ecm, lay it aside. Remove the electrical connection from the right knock sensor pigtail and the coil pack. Loosen the coil pack retainer bolts and do not tighten the j 43301 coil pack remover (J 43301) too much. Thread the j 43301 into the coil pack then lift it out from the cam cover with the even pressure. Check the coil pack seals and Spark Plug boots for damage and replace as needed, then position the Spark Plug boots with the spark plugs and gently tighten coil pack into place. Install the coil pack retainer bolts and snug them up to 8 n.m (71 lb in). Connect the electrical connector back to the coil pack and pigtail on the right knock sensor. Mount the ecm and bracket onto the engine, forgetting the bolts of ecm bracket to the cylinder head and intake plenum; tighten to 20 n.m (15 lb ft) and 8 n.m (71 lb in) respectively. Mount the bolt that fastens the coolant inlet pipe to the ecm bracket and tighten it to 20 n.m (15 lb ft). Align the harness connectors with the ecm connectors and get them in while locking the release levers. Replace case drain plugs back check clamp, leaving a minimum of 0.25-in. Gap between the clutch and the output housing. Finally, install the two bolts securing the afterboil coolant pump to the ecm bracket and tighten it to 10 n.m (89 lb in), connect the two cable harness clips to the ecm bracket, insert the chassis hose/pipes into the retainer at the ecm bracket, close the retainer and connect the evap quick connect fitting. Finally, seal quick connect fittings to the Fuel Rail, making sure that feed hose/pipe and return hose/pipe are well connected.
