How should gas charged shock absorbers be safely opened to avoid personal injury on 2004 Cadillac CTS?

Before cutting open a gas charged shock absorber users should discharge its high-pressure gas to prevent human injury to themselves. Safety glasses need to be worn when both centerpunching and drilling the shock absorber while maintaining caution against puncturing the shock absorber tube. The first centerpunch marks the tube 50 mm (2 inch) from the top and 25 mm (1.0 inch) from the bottom. Fix the shock absorber inside a vise under a horizontal position with its shock absorber rod fully stretched across. Insert the 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit through the shock absorber at the first centerpunch mark to deplete its gas or gas/oil mixture content while shop towels restrict the escaping oil. The second hole should be drilled from the second centerpunch mark using the same drill bit to allow oil to escape but requires the use of shop towels for proper containment. To finish drain the oil from the shock absorber position it facing downward over a drain pan while moving the rod through its tube.
