2004 Cadillac CTS Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the steering knuckle on 2004 Cadillac CTS?
A: Replacement of a Steering Knuckle begins with vehicle lift and wheel support then tire removal followed by hub and wheel bearing removal. First detach the Steering Knuckle retaining nut from the outer tie rod and use the universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) to remove the tie rod from the knuckle. Start by unscrewing the retaining nut from the lower stabilizer shaft link then detach the stabilizer shaft link from the lower Control Arm. You must first remove the upper Control Arm to Steering Knuckle pinch bolt to separate the upper Control Arm from the Steering Knuckle. Start by using the Ball Joint remover (J 43631) on the lower Ball Joint while simultaneously removing the retaining nut. The lower Ball Joint then separates from the Steering Knuckle. Steering Knuckle separation from the lower Ball Joint stud should follow the removal of the lower Ball Joint retaining nut. Begin installation by mounting the Steering Knuckle onto the lower Ball Joint stud with a new lower Ball Joint retaining nut before achieving a 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) torque rate and applying an additional 210-degree turn. The Steering Knuckle should receive the higher Control Arm while using the pinch bolt and nut to secure it at 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs. Torque). Secure the stabilizer shaft link to the lower Control Arm using thread-locker 242 or equivalent on the threads then tighten the retaining nut to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Secure the Steering Knuckle with the outer tie rod then install its retaining nut while achieving a torque setting of 75 nm (55 ft. Lbs.). Install the wheel bearing/hub unit before mounting the tire which you will combine with the wheel afterward lowering the vehicle down.
