2004 Chevrolet Cavalier Steering Column Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are required to service and repair the tilt steering column on 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: These tools serve to service and repair the tilt Steering Shaft: j 41688 centering sphere installer and others. J 41688 centering sphere installer. All work begins by turning off the sir system while also uninstalling the Steering Column jacket. First remove the lower spring retainer. Then take out the lower bearing spring followed by the lower bearing seat. Then extract the adapter and bearing assembly out from the Steering Column jacket assembly before you remove the Steering Shaft assembly. The four support screws must be discarded before separating the Steering Column support assembly from its jacket. Mark both assemblies for reinstallation with a 90-degrees tilt between the upper shaft assembly and lower Steering Shaft assembly. Position the race and upper shaft assembly inside j 41688 and hold it in a vise before rotating the driver 90 degrees to release the centering sphere from both parts. Remove j 41688's race and upper shaft assembly along with its shaft preload spring and centering sphere. Introduce gm p/n 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) lubricant to the new centering sphere then put both the sphere and joint preload spring inside j 41688 so they can be compressed together. Ensure the race together with the upper shaft assembly forms a secure connection with the centering sphere before rotating the shaft downward by 90 degrees to achieve lock position. Remove the vise-mounted assembly and disassemble j 41688 before applying additional lubrication to the centering sphere. Match the alignment marks to install the upper and lower shafts at their 90-degree contact point. The Steering Column support assembly requires installation onto the Steering Column jacket assembly through a sequence of 4 support screws that should reach 8 n.m of torque (71 lb in). Steer the support assembly first before installing the adapter with bearing assembly into the jacket assembly while maintaining correct alignment. Install the lower bearing seat and lower bearing spring followed by a new lower spring retainer. Then compress the lower bearing spring to reach a length of 23.5 mm (0.93 in) between components before securing the Steering Column jacket. Enable the sir system afterward.
