- Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2004 Chevrolet Impala?A: You should remove the rear brake caliper from the vehicle while avoiding placing fingers ahead of the caliper pistons during compressed air usage because they could discharge forcefully resulting in potential injury. Install clean cloths into the caliper housing interior while you use low-pressure compressed air through its fluid inlet to extract the pistons. Proceed to remove the retaining ring attached to the caliper housing dust boot before throwing away the Piston dust boot seal. A small wooden or plastic tool should be used to remove and discard the Piston seal which sits within the caliper bore. Use denatured alcohol or an equivalent solution to clean the caliper assembly as well as the Piston bore and counterbore together with the Piston before air-drying them using filtered non-lubricated air. Check the caliper bore for any signs of cracks, scoring, pitting, excessive rust or corrosion; apply emery paper for removing light surface rust or corrosion but do a caliper replacement when these imperfections become permanent. Replace the caliper assembly when cracks or excessive damage are present. Thoroughly examine the caliper Piston for signs of chrome plating damage and change it if deteriorated. When installing the new seal apply delco supreme ii (R) brake fluid from gm p/n 12377967 or canadian p/n 992667 or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid from a sealed container to the caliper bore seating surface. Before setting the caliper Piston bottom half into its bore you should apply a small amount of the same fluid to the outer Piston surface. Install the new pivot dust boot seal onto the caliper Piston before pushing the Piston down to the bottom of the bore while making sure the dust boot seat is completely within the counterbore. After securing the dust boot with the retaining ring and placing the bleeder valve and cap, firmly tighten the valve then reinstall the rear brake caliper on the vehicle.
