Begin Water Pump replacement on a 3.8l engine by draining out the cooling system. Start by loosening Water Pump Pulley bolts before removing the Drive Belt and both Water Pump Pulley bolts and finally the pulley. First remove the Power Steering Pump by repositioning it before removing both Water Pump bolts and the Water Pump. You must first remove the Water Pump Gasket before cleaning and inspecting the surfaces where the pump joins. Install the new Water Pump Gasket before putting in the Water Pump. Secure the long Water Pump bolts to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.) tension while securing the short bolts to 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs.). Once you replace the Water Pump Pulley, fasten its bolts at 13 nm torque (115 inch lbs torque). Complete the process by putting back the Power Steering Pump along with the Drive Belt and then executing a filling of the cooling system.
