2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the wheel axle shaft on 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: Vehicle Axle Shaft replacement requires first lifting the vehicle then removing wheels and tires together with the engine protection shield. The Wheel Speed Sensor wiring harness requires removal from its retainers before disconnecting the sensor from the harness. Three metal fasteners require removal from the system: front brake hose retaining bolt, front stabilizer bar link from lower Control Arm, upper shock module retaining from shock tower. The service targets the Steering Knuckle by removing its Tie Rod End and left and right upper Ball Joint pinch bolt and nut and shock module from the shock tower. First detach the Steering Knuckle from both upper Control Arm and front Axle Shaft from the Steering Knuckle assembly. Secure the connection of front shock module/steering knuckle to the frame structure with mechanical wire or a hook support system. Use a brass drift to strike the tripot housing then overcome snap ring pressure before disconnecting the left side Axle Shaft from the Differential carrier assembly. Repeat this process on the right side Axle Shaft from the clutch fork housing assembly. Extract the Axle Shaft in a straight direction from the Differential carrier assembly or the clutch fork housing assembly until removal. Begin by installing the front axle Axle Shaft in the Differential assembly before you eliminate the mechanics hook or wire from the front module knuckle. The front Axle Shaft should be installed into the Steering Knuckle then the shock module should be positioned into the shock tower before final mounting. Begin with installing the upper Ball Joint onto the upper Control Arm and secure it with both the pinch bolt and nut while keeping the shock module retaining nuts in place for installation. Drive the new retaining nut for the front Axle Shaft at 140 nm torque (103 ft. Lbs. Torque). The Steering Knuckle accepts the Tie Rod End along with the stabilizer bar link before the front brake hose retaining bolt installation. Install the front Wheel Speed Sensor wiring harness back into its retainers then install the electrical connector of the front Wheel Speed Sensor. The procedure ends with reinstallation of the engine protection shield along with the tire and wheel assembly followed by a reducing of the vehicle.
