Q: How to replace the rear axle shaft wheel bearing and seal on 2004 GMC Savana 3500?
A: Before starting rear axle seal replacement or bearing work you should raise the vehicle then remove the Axle Shaft. The seal removal tool designed for this purpose will extract the Axle Shaft seal when targeting only the seal replacement. Installation of rear axle seal and bearing remover (J44685) and slide hammer (J02619-1) in the axle housing behind the axle bearing allows users to draw on slide hammer (J02619-1) for removal of Axle Shaft seal and bearing on 8.6-inch axle applications. Place the Wheel Bearing remover (J29712) inside the axle housing behind the axle bearing then use its nut to extract the Axle Shaft seal and bearing. The installer tools (J23690 for 8.6-inch axles and J45853 for 9.75-inch axles) combined with the universal driver handle (J8092) help users properly install the Axle Shaft bearing into the axle housing by using them until the tool reaches the tube. Use the axle pinion oil seal installer (J21128) to install the 3.6-inch Axle Shaft seal while making sure it reaches complete depth into the axle tube. Using the rear axle bearing/seal installer (J45853) with the universal driver handle (J8092) properly position the Axle Shaft seal inside the axle tube for both 9.75-inch axles. After installation of the Axle Shaft you must fill the rear axle before properly lowering the vehicle.
