2005 Buick Century Brake Line Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake line using the J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit on 2005 Buick Century?
A: In order to replace the brake pipe, use J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit (J 45405), and always choose double-walled steel brake pipe to secure the brake system. Start by examining the part of the brake pipe to be replaced and removing it from the retainers where necessary. Measure the pipe length to be replaced with bends included and taking added lengths for flares, which measures 6.35mm (0.250 in) for a pipe diameter of 4.76mm (3/16 in). Prune the brake pipe to achieve the measured length correctly using the pipe cutter provided in the J 45405. Select the right size of brake pipe and tube nuts, strip nylon coating from one end that should be flared with the help of coating stripping tool from the J 45405, and chamfer the inside and outside diameter of the pipe using the de-burring tool from the same J 45405. Mount the tube nuts, clean the brake pipe and the J 45405 of all contaminants, and prepare the dies by twisting the lose die clamping screw and using the die halves to die cage. Insert the prepared end of the pipe into the dies, tighten up the clamping screw, apply the forming mandrel to produce the flare. Upon formation, check the flare for shape and diameter, but it should be 7.10 mm (0.279 in) with tolerance of 0.18 mm (0.007 in) when flare diameter is for 4.76mm (3/16 in) diameter of piping. Form the new pipe as needed and keep 19 mm (3/4 in) away from moving parts of the systems and install the pipe with the right unions. Lastly, fasten the brake pipe to the retainers and bleed hydraulic brake system and test for leaks with engine running and brakes on.
