2005 Buick Park Avenue Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake line using the J 29803-A ISO Flaring Kit on 2005 Buick Park Avenue?
A: The replacement of brake pipes must start with a J 29803-A ISO Flaring Kit (J 29803-A) while using only double-walled steel brake pipe for safety reasons. Start by purchasing steel fitting nuts and gauge the proper pipe size from the outside diameter measurement. A tube cutter allows you to cut the pipe square while reaching the correct length by advancing it minimally between turns without applying force. The correct pipe length can be measured by adding 3.2 mm (0.125 inch) to each ISO flare measurement of the old pipe. Before pipe flaring you need to install fittings while chamfering both outside and inside diameters through the use of a de-burring tool. Secure the J 29803-A inside a vise before selecting the proper collet and forming mandrel matching the pipe size. Insert the mandrel into position while securing the J 29803-A. Turn the forcing screw until it touches the mandrel after which return it once full revolution. After sliding the clamping nut onto and around the brake pipe, insert the prepared pipe through the collet with its end resting at 19 mm (0.750 inch) beyond the collet and verify that the pipe end touches the mandrel face. Tighten the clamping nut securely to stop the pipe from pushing out; however refrain from over-tightening the forcing screw to stop the flare from growing too large. Crank up the forcing screw until it reaches its limit before you loosen the clamping nut to break down the clamping nut and collet assembly. The measured diameter of the flared section must fall within a range of 6.92 mm to 7.28 mm (0.272 inch to 0.286 inch). The last step involves shaping the new pipe through a tube bender to match the original configuration while meeting specifications for minimum clearances that should maintain 19 mm (0.75 inch) around moving elements and 13 mm (0.50 inch) around vibrating components and 7 mm (0.25 inch) for shielded lines unless they are attached to components.
