2005 Cadillac DeVille Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake pads (J55) on 2005 Cadillac DeVille?
A: To change the rear brake pads (J55), one needs first to check the level of fluid on the brake master cylinder reservoir. If it is above midway between the maximum-full and minimum allowable levels, drain fluid to attain that midway point. Lift and support the vehicle and mate the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange before removing the tire and wheel assembly. Compress the piston of the brake caliper using a large c-clamp to press the caliper piston into the bore so that it moves over the brake rotor, then release the c-clamp. Support the brake caliper with the heavy mechanic's wire to avoid damaging the hydraulic flexible brake hose, shift the caliper upward without detaching the hose, and another large c-clamp with the old inner Brake Pad or wood block against the piston of the caliper to completely compress it. Pull off the old Brake Pad or wood block; then pry out the inboard and outboard brake pads from the caliper bracket and examine the Brake Pad retainers. Monitor the Brake Caliper Bolt suspension boots for malfunction and install them if it is required, inspect the brake caliper pin bolt for corrosion and change it if it is required and examine the brake caliper piston boot for degradation and re-calibrate or replace the caliper if it is degraded. Install the Brake Pad retainers and new inboard and outboard brake pads into the caliper bracket; align the caliper down over the pads and apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone lube on to the rear brake caliper bolts before installing and tightening brake caliper bolts-pins to 31 nm (23 ft. Lbs.). Mount the tripodometer securely to the front axle of the car. Start the engine and enage 1st gear, and drive the car following all stop signs. Brakes slowly as needed to avoid having a rubber bottom. At each stop (do not crease), remove the driver's foot from the accelerator but do not stop the car, let it coast to a stop. Measure the stopped speed (consumed paper per second) at approximately 1, 4, 7, 10, and 13 seconds after starting from the stop, at least three trials at each time point. You should measure six stopping distances spaced at this should be done repeatedly until the firm brake pedal is accomplished which will seat the brake caliper pistons and pads correctly. Finally, the addition of filling the brake master cylinder reservoir up to the correct level and pad and rotors burnishing.
