2004 Cadillac DeVille Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front brake pads (without J55) on 2004 Cadillac DeVille?
A: Before starting front Brake Pad replacement (without J55), check the brake master cylinder fluid reservoir; normal fluid levels require no action but higher levels need reducing to the midway point. Lift the car using the correct equipment then detach the tire and wheel platform. Apply a c-clamp to the caliper body to compress the brake piston but position the ends of the clamp against both the caliper and Brake Pad. Tighten the clamp until the piston can pass the rotor. Fasten the caliper with mechanical wire to avoid brake hose damage during step 2. Place the caliper piston under the second c-clamp attached to an old Brake Pad or wooden block to drive it all the way in. Remove both bolts of the c-clamp and the old Brake Pad. Take out the inboard and outboard brake pads from the caliper bracket. Inspect the Brake Pad retainers one by one. Before assembly test and replace damaged caliper bolt suspension boots and replace corroded caliper pin bolts when necessary. Also inspect and replace the caliper piston boot if deteriorated. Place Brake Pad retainers and both brake pads into the caliper bracket and position the caliper below before lubricating caliper pin bolts with thin niglube grease. Place the lower brake caliper pin bolt by hand then torque it to 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs.). Place the wheel and tire back into position and lower the car. Push the Brake Pedal from zero to two-thirds of its range with the engine turned off while taking it slowly. Follow these steps several times when the Brake Pedal maintains full pressure to push caliper pistons and brake pads into their designated positions. Replace all brake parts and complete the job by adding proper reservoir fluid and running a Brake Pad wear test.
