2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Clutch assembly on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The displacement of the compressor clutch assembly requires the following essential tools: the mechanics require two tools: universal spanner wrench (J 37872) and snap ring pliers (J 6083). Universal spanner wrench (J 37872) and snap ring pliers (J 6083). Start by taking out the compressor while discarding the compressor clutch plate bolt through the use of the universal spanner wrench (J 37872) which should be used to hold the compressor clutch plate steady. Place three 5/16 x 1 inch bolts in the place of the adjustable dowels on the universal spanner wrench (J 37872). Start by removing the compressor clutch plate from the compressor followed by removing the compressor pulley snap ring with snap ring pliers (J 6083) then eventually removing the compressor pulley. Repeat compressor clutch coil removal with the snap ring pliers (J 6083). Next remove the compressor clutch coil snap ring with the same tool. Use an m6x1.0 tap to clean the clutch plate bolt threads before blowing out any remaining debris through compressed air. Use the snap ring pliers (J 6083) to install the compressor clutch coil snap ring after the compressor clutch coil. Snap ring pliers (J 6083) help install the compressor pulley snap ring as well as the pulley itself. Place the 0.4mm (0.016in) air gap shim inside of the clutch drive plate after applying small drops of oil and then install the compressor clutch plate. Use shims to create an air gap of 0.3 to 0.6 millimeters (0.012 to 0.024 inches) between the drive plate and pulley while monitoring the gap to prevent any pulley-drawing motion against the drive plate. Install the clutch drive plate bolt by using the universal spanner wrench j 37872 to hold the compressor clutch plate while tightening it to 12 n.m with colored adhesive on at least 5 threads. The compressor should be reinstalled and a leak test needs to be performed using the leak test tool (J 39400-A) on the fittings.
