2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Evaporator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the evaporator core on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Vehicle owners must remove the hvac module as the first step to change the Evaporator core. A small chisel helps to eliminate the Heater Core cover heat stakes before you retrieve the Heater Core. Open the passenger compartment filter door by unsnapping it while using a chisel to remove the Heater Core heat stakes. After that remove the lower hvac case screws to release the lower hvac case from its position. Finally, remove the Evaporator core. The new Evaporator core requires polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil addition before installation of new seal washers onto Evaporator core fittings. You need to install the thermal expansion valve (TXV) along with its bolts while tightening them to 7 n.m (62 lb in). The hvac module assembly accepts the Evaporator core after installing its foam seals to their designated positions. Check that the orifice plate sits properly before installing the screws into the lower hvac case using 1.8 n.m (15 lb in) of torque force. Validate the integrity of the lower hvac case foam Heater Core seal then replace it using kent industries adhesive black foam tape (P/N 46480) or an equivalent sealant. Position the Heater Core within the hvac module and then secure it properly by tighten its cover screws to 1.8 n.m (15 lb in). Reinstall the hvac module into the vehicle while performing refrigerant system evacuation then charging followed by fitting leak detection using halogen leak detector (J 39400-A). The operation ends by connecting the negative Battery Cable while filling the cooling system with fluid.
