2005 Chevrolet Impala Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What does the service of the engine control module (ECM) typically involve on 2005 Chevrolet Impala?
A: The service operations for powertrain control module (PCM) include either new pcm installation or eeprom electrically erasable programmable read-only memory programming. At first check the pcm for accurate selection before performing any replacement steps. The pcm needs replacement with a new service unit but this bulb requires programming before utilization because it ships without integrated programming parameters. The dtc p0602 signals an unprogrammed eeprom or an eeprom malfunction. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection requires you to keep off from both connector pins and circuit board components that have been soldered. The ignition must remain off after anyone touches pcm connectors because contacting all power connections will prevent damaging internal components. Typically use a scan tool to obtain engine oil life percentage then document the data because neglecting to reprogram the data into the new replacement module will force the engine oil life to start at 100% which requires an oil change after 5000 km (3,000 mi). The first step towards air cleaner housing cover removal is disconnecting the negative Battery Cable followed by removing the left front inner fender brace and air cleaner intake duct along with the air cleaner housing cover screws. The removal process requires pcm electrical connectors disabled before pcm extraction together with wiring harness from the air cleaner housing assembly and after pcm electrical connectors separation and pcm removal. The pcm requires connection to electrical connectors that should be tightened to 8 n.m (71 lb in). After that, install the pcm and wiring harness to the air cleaner housing assembly before securing the air cleaner housing cover with 4 n.m (35 lb in) torque on its screws. After reinstalling the air cleaner intake duct as well as the left front inner fender brace users should reconnect the negative Battery Cable. Programming of the new pcm should happen after completing the installation process.
