2005 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2005 Chevrolet SSR?
A: The procedure to overhaul brake master cylinders begins by taking it out of the vehicle and using a bench vise to fix the mounting flange during maintenance while making sure the rear of the primary Piston remains visible. You need to clean the exterior of the reservoir cap before you can extract it along with the diaphragm from the master cylinder. Check the reservoir cap and diaphragm for evidence of cuts, cracks, nicks and deformation and change all compromised parts. Begin by removing the master cylinder reservoir followed by depression of the primary Piston using a round-ended tool to extract the Piston retainer so you can extract the primary Piston assembly from the cylinder bore. Low pressure filtered air is introduced into the front port of the cylinder to release the secondary Piston device while also removing the primary assembly and secondary seals and the return spring. Remove both the primary Piston assembly and Piston retainer and seals from the secondary Piston. Use denatured alcohol to clean all interior and external surfaces of the master cylinder, secondary Piston , return spring while staying away from abrasive materials. An inspection of the master cylinder bore along with secondary Piston and return spring should identify cracks, scoring and pitting and corrosion and recommend a new master cylinder in case of any issues. Use non-lubricated filtered air to dry all components and apply delco supreme 11 brake fluid, gm p/n 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667), or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid from clean sealed containers for lubricating the master cylinder bore, secondary Piston , return spring and all overhaul components. Position the lubricated combination of primary seal and retainer together with secondary seal onto the secondary Piston before placing the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston assembly inside the cylinder bore. Use a circular smooth tool to press the primary Piston and install the new Piston retainer after inserting the lubricated new primary Piston assembly into the cylinder bore. The master cylinder reservoir must be secured to the master cylinder system before installing reservoir cap and diaphragm and reinserting the master cylinder into its original vehicle position.
