- Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2006 Buick Lucerne?A: The process begins with removing the rear brake caliper from the vehicle while following warnings about brake dust and fluid hazards and brake fluid interactions with paint and electrical parts. The replacement of the brake caliper assembly is necessary because the integral park brake actuator shaft seal is not serviceable when brake fluid leaks from the rear. Apply a wooden or plastic tool to extract the Brake Caliper Piston dust boot seal retaining ring following a complete drain of fluid from the caliper assembly. Place a wooden block on the inside wall of the caliper body across from the Piston while using low-pressure compressed air through a caliper inlet hose to push out the Piston. Pull out the Piston dust boot seal and the Piston seal from the caliper bore. The integral park brake needs inspection through park brake lever rotation. Do not dismantle the parts because the lever and return spring along with the actuator shaft seal remain non-repairable. The brake caliper assembly needs replacement whenever the mechanism becomes either bound or seized. Apply no abrasive materials to caliper pistons and discard caliper bore material when cracks or scorelines or pitting or heavy rust appears on the assembly. Use fine emery paper to remove surface rust or corrosion from select areas. If unsuccessful, replace the assembly. Clean the caliper Piston bore and seal counterbore and Piston along with sleeves with denatured alcohol followed by drying them with filtered non-lubricated air. Check the caliper Piston for damage then replace it when necessary and also check the caliper mounting holes for the same issues. The installation of the new Piston seal requires gm accepted or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid lubrication followed by bores integration. After installing the caliper Piston dust boot seal you should insert the Piston into the bore while using a spanner type wrench to rotate it clockwise until complete Piston seating. Install the dust boot Piston into the counterbore until it reaches its full dimension before adding the retaining ring. During hydraulic brake system bleeding inspect for leaks after installing the brake caliper to the vehicle. Leaks which travel from the front through the Piston dust boot seal should result in replacing the entire caliper Piston assembly.
