2006 Chevrolet Corvette Front Cross-Member Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Front Cross-Member in the front suspension on 2006 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The front suspension crossmember replacement process starts by breaking free the generator from its attachment to the accessory bracket followed by removal of the washer pump/reservoir. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature switch electrical connector and the front headlamp electrical connector and move both connectors out of the way. Use engine support fixture (J 41803) with universal engine support fixture (J 28467-B) to support the engine before raising and supporting the vehicle. Proceed with removing the tire-wheel combination then move on to the outer tie rod end stud nut removal. Remove electrical connectors of Shock Absorber solenoid and electronic suspension control (ESC) sensor links whenever the vehicle has this equipment installed. After stabilizer shaft removal disconnect intermediate shaft lower coupling from steering gear then remove bolts from the electronic brake control module ebcm/brake pressure modulator valve bpmv bracket as you support and reposition the ebcm/bpmv and bracket toward the crossmember. Due to power steering gear mounting bolt and power steering fluid cooler removal from the crossmember, use lifted power steering gear extraction from the crossmember structure. The transverse spring compressor (J 33432-A) should be used to extract the transverse spring from the vehicle. First remove the Shock Absorber bolts from the lower control arms then remove the crossmember bolts from the lower control arms. A transmission jack should be placed under the crossmember while you work on removing engine mount lower nuts and wheel speed sensor wiring harnesses. Additionally disconnect the electrical harnesses and brake pipe from the crossmember clips before removing the crossmember mounting nuts. After removing the mounting nuts you can pull down the crossmember from the vehicle. After raising the crossmember into position you should align the engine mount studs with frame rail dowel pins. Apply 110 n.m (81 lb ft) torque to new crossmember mounting nuts while proceeding to tighten the engine mount lower nuts. Fasten the wheel speed sensor wiring harness together with both the brake pipe and electrical harness onto the crossmember. To install the transverse spring first use the transverse spring compressor (J 33432-A) before installing the lower Control Arm and shock absorbers and finally torque the Shock Absorber lower mounting nuts to 28 n.m (21 lb ft). Begin installation of the power steering gear followed by tightening its mounting bolts to 100 n.m (74 lb ft). Next install the bolts to the bpmv then connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear followed by installing the steering linkage outer tie rod ends. Connect esc sensor links together with Shock Absorber solenoid electrical connector before installing stabilizer shaft and tire and wheel assemblies. Continue lowering the vehicle then take out both engine support fixture (J 41803) and universal engine support fixture (J 28467-B) before reinstalling the generator and washer pump/reservoir. Reestablish the engine coolant temperature switch and front headlamp electrical connectors. Complete the service by connecting the negative Battery Cable while performing a necessary vehicle front end alignment.
