- Q: How to replace the primary cam gear and timing chain on 2007 Cadillac XLR?A: To replace the main timing chain and sprockets, eliminate the Oil Pump and the crankshaft sprocket to Oil Pump drive friction washer. Align the primary timing marks using the crankshaft socket (J 39946). Following that remove the secondary timing chains, primary drive chain tensioner, and the oil outlet tube. Remove the timing chain guide bolts and guide, then the camshaft intermediate slot holding bolt. Prepare the removal of the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket and camshaft intermediate sprocket as well as removal of crankshaft to crankshaft sprocket friction washer. Check and clean the components of camshaft timing drive. For installation, make sure to use a correct positioning of the friction washer, with the choice of crankshaft to crankshaft sprocket friction wafer with 63.5mm (2.5000 in) outside diameter, 45.25mm (1.7815 in) inside diameter that has a notch to clear the crankshaft pin. Install that washer and position the timing marks of camshaft intermediate and crankshaft sprocket vertically. Slowly align the timing chain onto the drive sprockets as the number one piston reaches the top dead center (TDC) and the crankshaft pin is at the 1 o'clock position using the crankshaft socket (J 39946) if required to rotate the crankshaft. Remove the camshaft intermediate retaining bolt, assemble the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket as well as camshaft intermediate sprocket, then install the camshaft intermediate retaining bolt and tighten to 60 n.m (44lb ft). Next install the primary drive chain guide and the bolts to a figure of 25n.m (18 lb ft) then install the primary drive chain tensioner and the oil outlet tube with bolts that should tighten to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Finally, install the secondary timing chains, remove the pin from the primary timing chain tensioner release lever, check that the primary timing marks are aligned vertically, install the crankshaft sprocket to Oil Pump drive friction washer which has an outer diameter of 62.0mm (2.4410mm) and an inner diameter of 45.25mm (1.7815 in) before reinstallation of the Oil Pump.
