- Q: How to replace the primary cam gear and timing chain on 2008 Cadillac XLR?A: If you decide to change the timing chain and sprockets, you'll first have to remove an Oil Pump, followed by the crankshaft sprocket to Oil Pump drive friction washer. Synchronize the timing marks with the aid of crankshaft socket (J 39946). The next step is to take off the secondary timing chains, the primary chain tensioner, and the oil outlet tube. Remove the timing chain guide bolts and guide, as well as the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt. Take off the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket and camshaft intermediate sprocket as an assembly and then take off the crankshaft to crankshaft sprocket friction washer. Examine, clean, and check the camshaft timing drive components. For installation, the right friction washer should be correctly aligned and then install the crankshaft to crankshaft sprocket friction washer. Position matches timing marks of a camshaft intermediate and those of crankshaft sprockets vertically and place the timing chain on the drive sprockets. Make sure that the number one piston is at the top dead center (TDC) and rotate the crankshaft using the crankshaft socket (J 39946) as required. Install the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and camshaft introductory sprocket as an assembly, and hold the camshaft introductory sprocket maintaining bolt to 60 n.m (44 lb ft). Mount the timing chain guide and its bolts, being sure that the bolts enter the drive chain guide traps. Tighten them to 25 n.m (18 lb ft), if needed. Then, install the master drive chain tensioner, then the oil outlet tube and bolts, tighten the latter to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Lastly, fit the secondary timing covers and ensure the timing marks are lying vertically again before re-fitting the crankshaft sprocket to Oil Pump drive friction washer, and the Oil Pump.
