2007 Cadillac XLR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are needed to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2007 Cadillac XLR?
A: To replace the crankshaft rear oil seal, the following tools are needed: crankshaft rear oil seal remover (J 42841-A), crankshaft rear oil seal installer (J 45930-A) and seal applicator (EN-48072). First, lift out the Flywheel and insert the crankshaft rear oil seal remover (J 42841-A) on the crankshaft making sure that it is fixed in place with retaining bolts. Run followed by a socket adapter (supplied) to plug eight 25 mm (1.0 in) self-drilling screws through the guide holes in the removal tool into the seal, tapering off drill speed as the screws sink into the seal. After all the screws are fitted in, pull off the retainer bolts and put in the center forcing screw, tightening it to draw the seal assembly off the crank shaft. Make sure the engine block is a deep bore for engines up to and after march 1, 1996, and check the bore and crankshaft flange for damage. Drain back of the oil drainage hole and cleaning bore by cleaner solvent gm p/n 12378392 or 12346139 (Canadian P/N 88901247). It is advisable to use suitable bolts from the crankshaft rear oil seal installer (J 45930-A) to hold the seal applicator (EN-48072) within the pilot base so that it properly aligns with the crankshaft. Mount the seal applicator (EN-48072) onto the pilot base with applying sealant gm p/n 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) onto the outer diameter of the bore without obloading the drain hole. It should spread the sealant evenly within the bore and remove the housing of the applicator and the base of the pilot, letting the hole for the drain back be clear and that the sealant is spread evenly. Mount the new cassette style crankshaft rear oil seal to the center hub of the crankshaft rear oil seal installer (J 45930-A) securing it to the mounting bolts until firmly attached. Tighten the nut of the installer that presses against the crankcase till the drive portion bottoms against the crankcase and then releasing the pressure to take out the installer. Lastly wipe off the excess sealant and ensure that the new seal is fitted in correctly after measuring all distances for the outer and inner seals before reinstalling the Flywheel.
