First remove the tire and wheel assembly and then remove the Rack and Pinion Boot. Adjusting the rack bearing preload should only occur after removing the Tie Rod because changing this setting too early may result in pinion or steering rack damage. After removing the shock dampener from the inner Tie Rod you must slide it back onto the rack. Begin by installing the j 34028 inner Tie Rod wrench (J 34028) onto the flats of the inner Tie Rod housing then rotate it counterclockwise until the inner Tie Rod completely separates from the rack assembly. The threads on the rack assembly and inner Tie Rod require cleaning to remove existing loctite(R) residue. Install the inner Tie Rod onto Rack And Pinion through application of loctite(R) 262 or equivalent on its threads. The j 34028 torque wrench enables proper tightening of the 100 n.m (74 lb ft) inner Tie Rod. During this process the mechanic must hold the rack steady. Set the shock dampener onto the inner Tie Rod housing until its bottom point reaches then install the Rack and Pinion Boot and the tire and wheel assembly. After removing the safety stands, lower the vehicle and inspect wheel alignment measurements.
