2007 Chevrolet HHR Brake Line Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Brake Lines Using the J 45405 Brake Line Flaring Kit on 2007 Chevrolet HHR?
A: In order to service/repair the brake pipes, use the J 45405 Brake Pipe Flaring Kit (J 45405) and have safety precautions in the area of brake fluid irritants and the double-walled steel brake pipes to avoid system failure. The first step is to examine the area where the brake pipe has to be replaced and remove the retainers as required. If you have to section the brake pipe, find a good spot (which can not be bent or mounted under anything), and measure the amount of tubing needed, including the required length for flares: 6.35mm (0.250 in) with 4.76mm (3/16 in) diameter pipe and 9.50mm (0.374 in) with 6.35mm (1/4 in) diameter pipe. Cut the brake pipe right through using the pipe cutter provided in the J 45405. Choose a proper size of brake pipe and tube nuts, strip the nylon covering from the end of the part to be flared with the help of the coating stripping tool from the J 45405 and chamfer the internal and external diameter of the pipe with the de-burring tool provided with a kit. Mount the tube nuts, clean the brake pipe and the J 45405 of any contaminants, and choose the corresponding die set. Tighten first the clamping screw firmly and insert the prepared pipe end in the die cage to ensure proper insertion. Then use the forming mandrel and finishing cone as instructed and check the accuracy of flare diameter: For 4.76 mm (3/16 in) in diameter pipe: 6.74-7.10 mm (0.265-0.279 in); for 6.35 mm (1/4 in) in diameter pipe: 8.57-9.27 mm (0.344-0.358 in). Refine the new pipe utilizing an acceptable brake pipe bending tool if needed, preserve a clearing of 19 mm (3/4 in) from running elements, and fixture the pipe with suitable unions. Finally fasten the brake pipe to retainers, depressurize the hydraulic brake system, and check for leaks when the engine is running, brakes applied.
