• Q: How to replace the front disc brake pads on 2008 Cadillac SRX?

  A: First check brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir before attempting to replace the front disc brake pads. If the level is above the midway point between maximum-full and minimum allowable, remove brake fluid to level midway. Pick up and support the vehicle, and replace it with a tire and wheel assembly. Count the red brake bulbs on that side, repeat the whole procedure on the other side, to remove the brake fluid on the left side, count the red brake bulbs on that side. Use the large c-clamp to compress the caliper pistons into the caliper bores and watch the caliper slide past the brake rotor and take off the c-clamp. Slightly loosen the brake caliper lower pin bolt whilst clinging onto the guide pin with a wrench and dropping it with mechanic heavy wire to avoid pocking the hydraulic flexible brake hose. Pivot the caliper up and take of brake pads from the caliper bracket, checking Brake Pad retainers for wear. Make sure that the caliper guide pin boots are fully seated to the caliper guide pin retaining seat and caliper boot seal retaining seat. Check the brake caliper guide pin bolts and pins for damage, replacing them if needed, and inspect the guide pin boots for slashes or decay. Pull outward on the caliper guide pin to make sure that it seats properly and check the Brake Caliper Piston boot for damage. Use a large c-clamp to push the caliper pistons all the way into the caliper bores then step off the Brake Pad retainers and new brake pads to the caliper bracket. Rotate the brake caliper downward over the brake pads, making sure that the lower caliper pin bolt threads are clean, before applying threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) to 2/3 of its length. Let the threadlocker dry in the order of about ten minutes before spreading a thin cover of niglube(R) gm p/n 18046532 grease on the front brake caliper guide pin. Replace for the lower brake caliper pin bolt. And tighten it to 34 n.m (25 lb ft). Replace the tire and wheel assembly and, with the engine turned off, press the Brake Pedal to about 2/3 of its travel and slowly release it again. Repeat the process until a firm Brake Pedal feel returns and now fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the correct level and burnish the pads and rotor.
