- Q: How to replace the shock absorber (W/F55) on 2008 Cadillac XLR?A: The replacement procedure for Shock Absorber w/f55 begins by disconnecting the front shock esc harness connector followed by raising and supporting the vehicle. The first action requires removing the tire assembly together with the wheel. Replacement of the shock will become necessary when the upper shock shaft displays damage as the esc connector develops a seal with this area. The procedure for Shock Absorber replacement must be done with hand tools only to first remove the upper mounting nut and insulator retainer and insulator and then proceed with the lower Shock Absorber mounting bolts and nuts. Using a pry bar to compress the Shock Absorber from below allows for successful installation of the shock support tool (J 43822) when the shock is in its compressed state. Begin by removing the Shock Absorber from the vehicle and proceed to detach the shock support tool (J 43822) from the Shock Absorber followed by the insulator and its retainer. Installation of the shock support tool (J 43822) to the Shock Absorber should begin the process which will be followed by insulator and insulator retainer installation. The Shock Absorber should be positioned between upper shock support and lower Control Arm before adding the insulator then the insulator retainer with a nut to the upper shaft and tightening the nut to 26 n.m (19 lb ft). You need to uninstall the shock support tool (J 43822) from the Shock Absorber while using the transverse spring compressor (J 33432-A) to compress the coil spring. Raise the lower Control Arm to allow mounting with Shock Absorber lower joints before installing bolts with nuts then tightening the nut to 28 n.m (21 lb ft). Following removal of the transverse spring compressor (J 33432-A) from the coil spring finish installation by putting on the tire and wheel assembly and lowering the vehicle then reattaching the esc harness connector by checking the connection through upward pull on the connector.
