2008 Chevrolet Colorado Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal and housing on 2008 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: The crankshaft rear oil seal and housing replacement starts by taking away the Flywheel. Proceed by removing the 2 bolts securing the Oil Pan to the crankshaft rear oil seal housing and afterward removing the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts. Place 2 bolts into the threaded holes to function as jack screws before tightening them equally which will release the crankshaft rear oil seal housing from the engine block and Oil Pan. After installation of the bolts remove both the housing and engine block. Next remove the bolts from the jack screw holes but maintain caution to prevent damaging the seal bore. A hammer and punch tool will extract the crankshaft rear oil seal from its housing before discarding the seal. Both the crankshaft rear oil seal housing and the engine block and Oil Pan sealing surfaces need cleaning followed by thorough inspection. A 3 mm (0.12 in) bead of sealer should be applied to these three contact surfaces: the crankshaft rear oil seal housing against the engine block, the housing against the Oil Pan, and the Oil Pan surface against the housing. Reposition the crankshaft rear oil seal housing through right side alignment dowel positioning followed by tilting the left side upward before pressing it against the engine block into final position using left side alignment dowel alignment. Install crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts and Oil Pan bolts with torque set to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Lightly oil the crankshaft rear oil seal lip with clean engine oil and fit the plastic installation sleeve onto the crankshaft before using a rear seal installer (J 44215) with driver handle (J 8092) and a hammer to push the new seal into the housing until it reaches a square position and a complete installation lower point. Finally, reinstall the Flywheel.
