2009 Cadillac DTS Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2009 Cadillac DTS?
A: Before putting in a new rear oil seal, disconnect the transaxle and the Flywheel. Put the j 42841-a on the crankshaft and attach its retaining bolts. With a socket adapter attached to the variable speed drill, add eight one-inch self-drilling screws into the seal through the guide holes of the removal tool, slowing the drill while you screw them into the seal. Once the screws are installed, remove the retaining bolts, install the center screw and pull off the seal assembly from the crankshaft. If using an engine from 1993 through february 29, 1996, fit a lip-type seal to a shallow bore (1). For engines produced from march 1, 1996 or later, use the same lip-type seal in a deep bore (2). Open the engine and assess the block bore and the crankshaft flange for any possible damage, then remove any obstructions from the oil drain-back hole (1). Run the bore through the action using cleaner solvent gm p/n 12378392 or 12346139 (Canadian P/N 88901247). Insert either (2) 8 mm or (3) 11 mm bolts from the j 45930-a into the pilot base to fit it over the crankshaft, with the hub of the pilot already in place in the recess. Use the specified bolts to retain the en-48072 pilot base and fit the en-48072 applicator housing so that it is seated fully in the bore. Once you determine the drain hole location with the locator, cover the bore's outsides with gm sealant gm p/n 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148), avoiding it around the drain hole. Pull the whole en-48072 housing out slowly and carefully remove the pilot base while confirming that the sealant is spread evenly and there is nothing obstructing the hole for the drain back. When fitting the bolt, select the proper size (2) 8 mm or (3) 11 mm for the j 45930-a. Tighten the center nut (1) until the center hub (2) extends about 15 mm (0.591 in) past the plate (3). Do not use any lubricant on the rear oil seal of the crankshaft. Get the new oil seal, put it on the shaft of the center hub, put in the bolts and tighten until the seal is firmly on the j 45930-a engine. Put the seal in by tightening the nut so that the drive section is level against the crankcase; after that, loosen the center nut and the mounting bolts to get the j 45930-a out. Clean up any added sealant and make certain the seal is properly in position, so that its outer edge is below the part of the engine block (2) by 0.500-0.800 mm (0.0197-0.0315 in) and its inner section is below the seal (5) edge by 0. After removing the sealant, clean the tools and arrange the Flywheel and transaxle again.
