2008 Cadillac DTS Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2008 Cadillac DTS?
A: The first step is to take out the transaxle and Flywheel before replacing the Crankshaft rear oil seal. Put j 42841-a onto the Crankshaft and secure it with its retaining bolts. Place the self-drilling screws provided onto the drill in such a way as to feed them flush into the seal through the holes in the removal tool, maintaining a slower drill speed as each screw enters the seal. Once the screws are in place, tighten the retaining bolts and insert the center screw to lift off the seal assembly from the Crankshaft. The bore in the engine block must be 15 mm deep for engines manufactured after march 1, 1996 or 8 mm deep for engines produced between 1993 and february 29, 1996. This requires using the j 38817-a tool for installation. Look for damage to the engine block bore and Crankshaft flange, as well as remove any debris blocking the oil drain-back hole. Use cleaner solvent gm p/n 12378392 or 12346139 to clean the bore. Bolt the en-48072 pilot base to the Crankshaft with the j 45930-a bolts in either 8 mm or 11 mm lengths. The application housing, j 45930-a, should be slid down onto the pilot base until it seats in the cylinder bore. After that, apply sealant gm p/n 12378521 onto the walls of the bore, paying attention not to clog the drain opening. Apply the sealant to the inside of the bore thoroughly, making sure to leave the oil drain back hole open prior to disassembling the applicator and pilot base. Slide the new cassette style Crankshaft rear oil seal onto the center hub of the j 45930-a. Securely fasten the mounting bolts into the Crankshaft Flywheel bolt holes and tighten them properly. Slide the j 45930-a until the mounting nut is fully engaged with the crankcase. Loosen the nut and mounting bolts before taking out the component. Properly align and secure the new seal by ensuring its outer surface sits 0.500 to 0.800 mm below the engine block and the inner surface of its sleeve is at a distance of 0.400 to 0.900 mm from the outer circumference of the seal. Wipe down the tools to clear away any leftover sealant, then put back in place the Flywheel and transaxle.
