2009 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace a Rack and Pinion Boot on 2009 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: First raise the supported vehicle and remove the tire assembly before steering gear boot replacement. First take off the boot's outer end spring then disassemble the outer tie rod together with its jam nut. Cut off the crimp clamp that's attached to the inner end followed by boot removal so you can check the inner tie rod for corrosion and contamination. The repair process should continue after checking for boot replacement. Disassemble the steering gear boot then clean all debris and grease from where the inner tie rod meets the boot's contact points. Use the following steps to install: wipe the inner tie rod to remove all moisture then clean dry all boot sealing areas. Push 3/4 of the grease packet through the boot's small end opening inside the cavity before distributing the remaining grease on the shaft near the boot's small end connection. Put the boot into position allowing the large end to rest inside the gear housing groove. Next install the boot with the large clamp retaining it loosely. The j 22610 (Keystone Clamp Pliers should be used to crimp the large clamp which must seat the small boot end properly inside the inner Tie Rod End groove. Mount the spring clamp onto the small boot end before applying the jam nut 174 millimeters (6.85 inches) from the boot clamp and finally securing the outer tie rod. After reinstalling the tire assembly perform front wheel alignment tests while making necessary adjustments.
