First discard both boot clamps before you use a side cutter to detach the boot from the CV Joint as well as the wheel drive shaft. Using snap ring pliers install the new retaining ring into the CV Joint while making sure all internal parts stay lubricated and apply remaining lubricant to the ball bearings and cage of the CV Joint. Check the boot shape before placing the clamp between bolts and washers then inspect the boot for damage. Reshape it if required. Use pliers specified as j 42572 to press boot clamps toward each other until the gap (a) shows 1.0 (0.040 in) measurement results. Clean the cap with an alcohol-based solvent then add a 3 mm (0.118 in) bead on the CV Joint face inside diameter while ensuring the mounting fastener holes align correctly. Use the j 22928-b - installer tool to apply the CV Joint cap while rotating the inner joint through four or five turns for lubricant distribution and then wipe away extra lubricant from the wheel drive shaft before reinstalling the shaft.
