2010 Chevrolet Impala Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft timing chain and sprocket on 2010 Chevrolet Impala?
A: You must remove the engine front cover prior to changing the camshaft Timing Chain along with its sprocket. Position both the crankshaft timing mark and the tensioner's bottom timing mark in alignment. Also position the timing mark on the camshaft position actuator gear against the tensioner's upper timing mark. Remove the camshaft position actuator bolts before extracting the Timing Chain, camshaft position actuator, and crankshaft sprockets. Start by taking off the Timing Chain Tensioner bolts followed by the tensioner itself then move forward to remove the crankshaft sprocket and the Timing Chain dampener together with its bolts. The camshaft position actuator filter must be thrown out after removal from the camshaft's end. Any time the actuator requires removal users must install a fresh camshaft position actuator filter. Begin by installing the new filter before putting on the crankshaft sprocket. Apply prelubricant to the sprocket's thrust surface. Fasten the Timing Chain Tensioner and its tightening bolts at 21 nm (15 lb ft). The en-47719 instrument should be used to achieve full tensioner collapse before inserting its retaining pin through the retaining hole. Position the crankshaft timing mark against the timing mark on the bottom of the Timing Chain Tensioner then place the camshaft sprocket underneath the hanging Timing Chain before installing it to the crankshaft gear. Make sure the timing mark from the camshaft position actuator gear lines up with the top timing mark on the tensioner before positioning the dowel from the actuator into the camshaft's dowel hole. Use a torx plus(R) bit alone to install the camshaft position actuator bolts while being mindful of the fastener's susceptibility to damage. Apply no thread locking compounds on the camshaft position actuator bolts to keep the area free from contaminants. Secure the camshaft actuator to the camshaft through bolts that need to be tightened to 16 nm (12 lb ft). First remove the retaining pin of the Timing Chain Tensioner then apply clean engine oil to crankshaft and camshaft sprockets before you put the engine front cover in place.
