Turn the differential carrier while maintaining visibility of the output shaft end position so the horizontal angle of the differential pinion shaft (701) can be reached. Drive the Axle Removal Wedge (J 42562) between the output shaft's end and the differential pinion shaft's end. Strike the axle removal tool end with a hammer to collapse the output shaft compression ring (512) and push the output shaft through the differential side gear. Take out the differential carrier (700) and apply snap ring pliers to eliminate the compression ring (512) from the output shaft. Start by separating the sun gear thrust bearing (698) off the differential carrier sun gear while taking care to handle stuck components before moving onto the differential carrier sun gear (697), park gear (696) and internal gear thrust bearing (695) from the differential carrier internal gear followed by removing the sun gear shaft (689). Check the sun gear shaft (689) for signs of hardware damage. Begin installation by fitting the sun gear thrust bearing (698) with the differential carrier sun gear (697) and park gear (696) and internal gear thrust bearing (695) while using the sun gear shaft (689) into the differential carrier (700) which will be installed into the case followed by case extension housing reinstallation. The installation process demands Transjel Lubricant J 36850 according to operational needs.

How to disassemble the differential case assembly on Buick Rainier?

To pull apart the differential case assembly, secure the differential case to a vise. Use the J 22888-D Side Bearing Remover Kit, in conjunction with the J 22888-20A , and J 8107-2 tool to remove the differential side bearings. Note that the ring gear bolts have left-hand threads which are to be removed carefully so that the ring gear does not get loosened, damaging the same in the process. If necessary, knock the ring gear off with a brass drift. Now, take out pinion shaft lock bolt and then the pinion shaft. Lastly, pull out the differential pinion gears and differential side gears while making sure that you roll the differential pinion out with its pinion thrust washers and pull the side gears out with its side gear thrust washers and mark the top and bottom or left and right of each differential pinion gear and differential side gears respectively for resetting.
