Q: How to Replace the Front Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on Buick Park Avenue?
A: To replace the Rack And Pinion, fit the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) to the Steering Column. Lift the vehicle, then take out the front tires and wheels as well as the Rack And Pinion heat shield. Before you detach and prevent disassemble coil within the Steering Column or intermediate shaft it is essential making sure that wheels are straight ahead and the Steering Column is in the lock position. Next tighten the other nut located at the bottom of the intermediate shaft. Loose the intermediate shaft pinch bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft on the Rack And Pinion. Unscrew the outer tie rods retaining nuts, then use the universal steering linkage puller (J24319-B) to pull out the outer tie rod from the Steering Knuckles. If necessary, pull the variable effort steering electrical connection from the Rack And Pinion and remove the Rack And Pinion pressure and return hoses (1, 4) and left stabilizer shaft insulator. Remove Rack And Pinion mounting bolts and remove the Rack And Pinion through left wheel opening but make sure you take out the outer tie rods if you replace your gear. For installation mount the new Rack And Pinion through the left wheel opening and tighten the bolts with 65 nm (48 ft. LBS). Aftermarket the left stabilizer shaft insulator, hook up the Rack And Pinion pressure and return hoses (1, 4) and tighten with 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.). If available, hook up the variable effort steering, one electrical connector that go to the steering knuckles and secure the outer tie rod end and bolt it to the steering knuckles and safe using retaining nuts and tighten it to 75 nm (55 ft. Lbs.). Connect the intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion and install the lower pinch bolt. Tighten of the lower pinch bolt to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the Rack And Pinion heat shield, tires, and wheels, lower the vehicle, remove the Steering Column lock pin (J42640). Lastly, bleed the Rack And Pinion system, as well as check for leaks and front toe adjustments.
