Buick Rainier Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on Buick Rainier?
A: Before installing the new lower intermediate Steering Shaft maintain front wheel straightness alongside Steering Column lock position because these measures will help prevent sir coil assembly damage through misalignment. Using your hands turn the Ignition Switch to lock then remove the key from the starter. You can lock the Steering Column by using the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) through the opening of the lower trim cover surrounding the Steering Column. Access the upper to lower intermediate pinch bolt by disconnecting the upper intermediate shaft boot from the lower intermediate shaft boot. After this step remove the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Tear the lower intermediate shaft from the upper intermediate shaft while also detaching the lower intermediate shaft boot from the power steering gear so the intermediate shaft boot can leave the vehicle. During installation, lift the vehicle to observe how the intermediate shaft relates to the power steering gear and Steering Column. Record these measurements for accurate assembly. Unbolt the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear input shaft and separate the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear. Lower the intermediate shaft into the vehicle until it reaches the power steering gear then secure it with a wrench using 40 nm torque (29 ft. Lbs.). Put the vehicle in its lowered position before installing and connecting the lower intermediate shaft boot to the power steering gear. Tighten the lower intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft through a pinch bolt torque setting of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Anchor the upper intermediate shaft boot to the lower intermediate shaft boot while making sure both components create a secure seal through the complete coverage of the lower intermediate shaft boot white insert. To unlock the Steering Column remove the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) from the Steering Column lower trim cover access hole.
